Visiting Streatham Food Festival in London

24 June 2017

I’ve lived in Streatham Hill for over two years now but, with the exception of the train station, I can probably count the amount of times that I have been into actual Streatham on my fingers. And it would be debatable as to whether I would need more than one hand – I usually end up in Brixton and Clapham instead. But whenever I do go into the town I always spot places that I mean to go back to, so when my friend suggested going to the annual Streatham Food Festival I was game. If there are two things in this world that I love then it’s food and convenience – and this would tick both boxes. I’m not sure how this festival has managed to escape my notice for the past two years. Continue reading “Visiting Streatham Food Festival in London”

London Fitness: Spinning

Back in the days before I actually owned a studio membership and developed a class addiction, I used to go to the gym weekly (or at least I went through phases where I went weekly) and use the equipment on offer. That inevitably involved a bike because that something I could figure out how to use without hurting myself. However, when it comes to exercise classes, in the past I have shied away from spin classes. They’re hard the first few I did I didn’t enjoy as much as other classes, however I have slowly started to come round to it. Plus, one thing all my spin classes have had in common is that they are a very good workout.

Four Places to Find Currywurst in London

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that I have a lot of love for Berlin. You might say that I am a little bit obsessed. I love the abandoned places turned into something new, the street art, the bars, the museums and, very importantly, the food. In particular, the currywurst: a bratwurst sausage covered in curry sauce. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

London Food Guide: Get Your Freakshake On

Several months ago now, I was perusing Facebook when I came across the most beautiful picture. It was some milkshakes, piled high with whipped cream, brownies, marshmallows… you name it, it was on there. The photo made my belly ache. When I saw the small print – that they were being made by a place in Australia – my heart basically broke. I seriously debated hopping on a plane to the other side of the world simply for a taste, but I managed to restrain myself. After all, if I did somehow manage to scrape together the money for a ticket, I wouldn’t be left with enough to actually buy the milkshake. Finally, a few weeks later, I spotted the news I’d been waiting for. The freakshake craze had made it across the pond to London. Now my mission is clear: test out as many freakshakes as humanly possible. So far I have only made it to three but I will keep you updated as and when I inevitably find more.

15 of London’s Sweet Treats

I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone for me to say that I have a bit of a sweet tooth – much like the majority of people. I love me some sugar. I equally love the savoury stuff too. I just basically want all of the food. Thankfully, in London, that is not a problem: there’s plenty of both. In particular, there is an infinite amount of bakeries and cafes that serve up every sweet treat you could want – from cupcakes and cookies to macarons and giant milkshakes. (If you are looking for something more of the coffee and cake variety then check out this post as well)!

Eight green spaces to find in London

I have spent the majority of my life living in the Kent countryside – pretty in the middle of a field where there’s more sheep than people. It was very picturesque – sprawling green fields, lambs jumping around in the spring and ducklings hatching in my back garden – but I prefer the hustle and bustle of a city, and London could not be more hustley and bustley if it tried. Although I love living here, it’s a pretty stressful city and I do miss Kent more than I thought I would. Happily, however, there is a huge variety of things to do in London – many of which provide a slice of the greenery and the peace I have been missing. Six pizzas to try in London

Updated: May 2020

I’m not sure I could ever pick just one favourite type of food but if I had to then pizza would definitely be a strong contender. I mean, I think everyone can agree that pizza is the best. Although I am, and always will be, the ultimate fan of a Domino’s and Netflix night in, I do on occasion also like to leave the house for my pizza and thankfully London provides many options for doing so.

A Guide to Brunching in London

I don’t think this is a particularly controversial thing for me to say (as I can’t imagine anyone will disagree) but brunch is easily the best meal of the day. Probably because if you’re working a 9-5 then brunch is a meal that is only possible two days a week so it has more of a novelty value. Poached eggs with a runny yolk, pancakes, Eggs Benedict, bacon … these are some of my favourite things. As such, I’ve brunched often since my move to London so I’ve complied a list of where I’ve been. Since I’ve done this alphabetically, I didn’t mean to leave the best until last but that is basically what has happened (although there are some other greats elsewhere on the list as well) – so make sure you make it to the end of this post! 10 Places for Tea, Cake and Coffee in London

If there is one thing that London is not short of, it’s coffee shops. And if there is one other thing that London is not short of, it’s places for good cake. Cafes are plentiful and there is many a quirky one, whether it’s one on a canal boat or in an old public bathroom. I must admit, I don’t know that much about coffee (I am more of a tea girl) but, if there is one thing I do know, it’s cake.

London’s Temporary Exhibitions

One of the best things about London as far as I’m concerned is the number of amazing free museums and galleries. Places like the the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Wellcome Collection and the Horniman Museum don’t cost a thing to get into if you want to see their permanent collections. They also often have a changing series of temporary exhibitions as well. Some of these are free to visit as well, while others come with a heftier price tag, and whether you like space, fashion, art, history, photography, travel, politics, or any number of other things, there is undoubtedly something awesome going on in a museum somewhere in London that will interest you.

Over the years, I’ve been several of these temporary exhibitions and so this is my guide to what’s going on in London’s museums and galleries and the kinds of thing you can find. I’ll try and remember to update it as often as possible.  Continue reading “London’s Temporary Exhibitions”
